The top 32 Call of Duty: World War II teams in the world converged on Columbus, Ohio August 15th-19th to compete for a $1.5 million prize pool.
Columbus becomes Upset City
In an early shocker, defending World Champions OpTic Gaming failed to make it out of the group stage on Thursday, falling 0-3 to Evil Geniuses and delivering their worst placement ever at Champs, 17th-24th place.
The next upset came as tournament frontrunners Rise Nation crashed out to a Top 16 finish after a reverse sweep from Luminosity Gaming.
Another surprise in the form of the 5th/6th place finish of Luminosity Gaming, meaning this is the first time in Call of Duty history that a Champs final will not feature either Karma (ret.) or JKap (Luminosity).
FaZe Up, Indeed
All four members of the longtime FaZe roster of Enable, Clayster, ZooMaa and Attach finished Top 4 at the event with three different teams. Enable is on Team Kaliber, Clayster finished fourth with eUnited, and ZooMaa and Attach stayed with FaZe.
The current FaZe Clan of ZooMaa, Attach, Replays, and Priestahh finished in third place following a tough five game set with Team Kaliber in the Loser’s Final.
Evil Geniuses Looking Smart, Team Kaliber Shows Confidence
EG (ACHES, Assault, Silly, Apathy) cruised to victory throughout the weekend after making it into bracket play, steamrolling over their competition along the way. However, the Grand Finals would be a different story, as the team failed to stroll to a first set win over a fine Team Kaliber (Accuracy, Enable, Kenny, Fero) squad. Team Kaliber showed grit and talent, taking the first match 3 – 2 and forcing a second with the Championship title on the line.
Evil Geniuses looked more capable after the reset, taking the Hardpoint and Search maps quickly and setting up for a Capture the Flag that could capture them the Championship ring. Wave after wave of pushes from TK, and EG just held them back each time, preventing TK from capturing the flag and securing the 3-0 sweep to win the 2018 Call of Duty Championships.
This is the first win for Assault and Silly, and the second for Aches and Apathy.
