On the eve of the League of Legends World Championship Finals, Riot Games announced fans pushed the total prize pool past the five million dollar mark.
The crowdfunding effort to raise the payout for all teams has been a factor in past years, with other esports like Dota2, Halo, and SMITE following the example. This year, 25% of sales from the Championship Zed and Championship ward skins are contributing to the total prize pool at Champs. Fans can continue to buy skins that will add to the prize total through November 6th, 2016.
Prize distribution breakdown (from lolesports.com):
- 1st place: 40%
- 2nd place: 15%
- 3rd/4th place: 7.5% (15% total)
- 5th-8th place: 4% (16% total)
- 9th-12th place: 2.25% (9% total)
- 13th-16th place: 1.25% (5% total)
