Daytona Beach isn’t just for spring breakers and summer bikers anymore; Halo players and fans will be descending on the beach town soon for the latest tournament. The Halo Championship Series and UMG are teaming up to put on HCS Daytona, an Open (meaning pros and amateurs can compete) tournament with a $75,000 prize pool.
The Halo competitive scene has been lacking in big Open events, tending to stick to invitationals or league tournaments, and the scene has been slow to attract new talent and new fans. The Halo World Championship gained a lot of attention last month, albeit for unflattering reasons, but it still shined a light on a somewhat dark corner of the console FPS esports scene.
HCS Daytona is a chance for Halo esports to re-emerge with a new look and possibly put forth some new players to cheer for before the next HCS League season begins. Tournament runners UMG have been pretty quiet since 2016’s UMG South Carolina, a Call of Duty World League event that was plagued with problems. UMG are hosting a couple of Call of Duty pro-am tournaments soon, but nothing on the scale and importance of a major tournament. The UMG site has long been home to online tournaments where players can make a name for themselves and earn money, and it looks like HCS Daytona may be UMG’s entrance back into the world of running big LAN events. Both parties have a lot riding on this event, so it will definitely be one to watch.
